We cherish our megalomania
From Gnomon Chronicles
Context: "Why do we accept the false notion in the USA that IF you work hard enough you can be wealthy, own a home, etc? Some of the hardest working people I have known are living in poverty in their old age."
For much the same reason that George Washington was revered as a hero in his day — as a saint after his day — despite his repeated displays of military incompetence, failing to act when he should have, and — when he finally took action — losing most his battles.
We cherish our megalomania.
