Anonymous Japanese soldier: December 4, 1943

Atobe was left behind and shot off 5 rounds and reloaded another clip and tried to commit suicide, and I said, "Wait!" "there is more ammunition" left. . . . We opened a can of food and ate it and with rifle and ammunition we went out to the beach. At that time, Engineer Nakada was not quite dead and was suffering so we finished him off with one round. This is also showing our love for a comrade . . . that he will not be taken prisoner.
