Carrie Berry: August 11, 1864
Mama has ben very buisy to day and I have ben trying to help her all I could. We had to go in the cellar often out of the shells. How I wish the federals would quit shelling us so that we could get our and get some fresh air.
Ella Jane Osborn: August 11, 1918
Chaplain Hyman of the 82 Div & the 326 Regiment came down and asked for three of us girls to go up & help them decorate the graves of the boys from his division, 12 of them buried in one day. He said we were to take the place of their mothers & Sister who could not be there. We placed the wreaths on each of their graves.

On the brighter side of thing I received another letter from Mary dated August 15, 1943. She is well and is helping her mother more to their new house which she describes as really beautifiul and nice .... I thank God that I can at least hear from home occasionally. It won’t be much longer, it can’t be, I will be an old man and that is no joke. In this life a guy don’t stay young very well.
Major, U.S. Army, Company I, 3rd Battalion, 57th Infantry Regiment, 21st Infantry Division, Philippine Scouts. P.O.W. in Cabanatuan. Perished on the Hell ship Enoura Maru in December, 1944.
