In his 2008 book The Moses Mystery, Gary Greenberg argues (convincingly, in my view) that:

• The Israelites are originally Egyptians: priests and followers of Akhenaten
• Moses was the chief priest of the Aten cult
• At the time of Akhenaten's death Moses fled from Egypt to avoid execution
