My Companions in the Bleak House

My Companions in the Bleak House (Czech: Přítelkyně z domu smutku) is a novel by Czech author Eva Kantůrková, first published in 1984 and was the first recipient of the Tom Stoppard Prize. It is a fictionalised account of Kantůrková's time in prison on charges of sedition in Communist Czechoslovakia.

Kantůrková spells out seven rules for life as a prisoner of conscience:[1]

  • Never let them catch you out.
  • Name no names.
  • Dictate your statement yourself.
  • Stay calm and smiling.
  • Never say more than you need.
  • Don't let them get you down physically.
  • At least once a day, rise above the banality of prison life

Project SHAMROCK

Project SHAMROCK, the sister project for Project MINARET, was an espionage exercise started in August 1945, which involved the accumulation of all telegraphic data entering into or exiting from the United States. The Armed Forces Security Agency (AFSA) and its successor, the National Security Agency (NSA), were given direct access to daily microfilm copies of all incoming, outgoing, and transiting telegrams via the Western Union and its associates RCA and ITT. NSA did the operational interception, and, if information that would be of interest to other intelligence agencies, the material was passed to them. "Intercepted messages were disseminated to the FBI, CIA, Secret Service, Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (BNDD), and the Department of Defense." No court authorized the operation and there were no warrants.

Exhaustion of remedies

The doctrine of exhaustion of remedies prevents a litigant from seeking a remedy in a new court or jurisdiction until all claims or remedies have been exhausted (pursued as fully as possible) in the original one. The doctrine was originally created by case law based on the principles of comity.

Fair Use

  • Jeff Becker, an entertainment and intellectual property lawyer, said that fair use arguments rely on whether or not a piece of media is transformative or offers commentary on the original work — in this case real estate photos. He said the "satire-parody issue may be present" in the case of McMansion Hell, and that the blog "very well could fall within fair use."
