Lyudmila Pavlichenko

"How many men have you killed?"

"Not a man...fascists. 309."

Lyudmila Pavlichenko on freedom of speech for Nazis.

Born 12th July 1916.

2,000 female snipers were deployed by the Red Army to fight a war of stealth on the fascist invaders - Lyudmila was the most successful. She was credited during WWII with 309 kills, including 36 enemy snipers. Even though initially, the sniper units were unwilling to take her on: "She looked like a model, with well-manicured nails, fashionable clothes, and hairstyle. Pavlichenko told the recruiter that she wanted to carry a rifle and fight. The man just laughed and asked her if she knew anything about rifles." She went on to become known as 'Lady Death' - a folk-hero of the Russian people.

Me: Yes, we sometimes have to kill. But if we must kill other human beings, let us acknowledge that they were human beings *whose lives we could not tolerate*. Never dehumanize your enemy. Never dehumanize anyone.
