2020 was an eventful year to say the least. A global pandemic shook the world, John Wick took on the Mario Brothers, it really was hell of a time to be alive. Oh what, you're telling me you've never seen The Mario Job? Let me fill you in…
What In The Mushroom Kingdom?
With the success of his first 3 John Wick movies, director Chad Stahelski reached out to Raja Gosnell (director of the 2002 live action Scooby Doo movie) to delve into the world of live-action/animation hybrid movies. You see, Chad had an idea, and that idea was The Mario Job…
Collaborating with Nintendo, Stahelski and Gosnell set out to create the ultimate live-action/animation hybrid adventure, which features John Wick roaming the world of the Mushroom Kingdom (fully animated) to assassinate Mario and his crew, hired by the big man Bowser himself.
The film featured a star studded voice cast, including:
- Chris Pratt as Mario
- Charlie Day as Luigi
- Tom Holland as Yoshi
- Camille Coduri as Toad
- Danny DeVito as Wario
- Mark Hamill as Waluigi
- Uma Thurman as Peach
- Zendaya as Daisy
- Karl Jones as Toadsworth
And many, many more. In fact, the cast was so stacked, Chad had to sell his soul to Nintendo to finish making the film, something he states he doesn’t regret to this day.
Wick vs. The Mushroom Kingdom
So how does the film actually hold up? Well, thanks to Nintendo’s patented ToadStage technology, Wick blends in seamlessly with the digital world around him, giving even Avatar 5: The Blow Of The Leaf a run for its money. The film’s animation was actually so good it forced Disney to shut down after their 97th live action remake, Moana II: Twice The Water, just didn’t look anywhere near as good (perhaps making 70 films a year and torturing VFX artists was a mistake!).
The action scenes are incredibly well choreographed too. The highlights include the parkour chase across the rooftops of Toadstool Town, the deadly motorbike chase down rainbow road, the mine cart showdown in Wario's Goldmine, and, of course, the massive battle in Bowser's Bloodsport Arena.
As for story, well, Reeves gets his third Oscar in a row for best performance as Wick, as he once again proves himself to be one of the greatest actors of all time. In fact, Reeves won an Oscar for ever film in which he played Wick, as Keanu was and always will be the greatest actor of our time. The scene where he and Mario settle their differences after the death of Luigi, and team up to battle Bowser and his Koopafia will go down in history, as will this film…
