Animation of the good cheap fast principle.

Good cheap fast (fast good cheap, etc.) is a popular design principle, typically expressed as:

You can have it good, you can have it cheap, you can have it fast: pick two."

Some authors (including this one) prefer "pick one".

The principle is similar to the project management triangle: a model of the constraints of project management which asserts:

  • The quality of work is constrained by the project's budget, deadlines and scope (features).
  • The project manager can trade between constraints.
  • Changes in one constraint necessitate changes in others to compensate or quality will suffer.
