Evolving Climate Activities
Lack of snow this year is a problem for northern Minnesota — elevated risk of fires (this is forest fire country), hard on agriculture and forest growth, and lower water levels impacting water sports (less canoeing, more portaging).
Moose were common in decades past, now relatively rare. I'm told they have retreated northwards, seeking cooler weather — troubled by heat, and by parasites (ticks) that thrive in the heat.
Just outside town today visiting friends who reported a flock of wild turkeys — surprising they should come this far north
Also magpies — a more western bird, surprising to find here.
Local map, note the pattern of lakes, long convoluted bodies of water. Portages are land bridges between lakes, long established as trade routes, and in modern era as recreational areas.
