Killing of Joan Sebastian Guerrero
On July 13, 2026, Joan Sebastian Guerrero, a 26-year-old Colombian national, was shot and killed by a United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Biddeford, Maine, United States. His three-year-old daughter was in the vehicle.
Maine officials said Guerrero was not the target of the arrest warrant the agents were executing. ICE said the officer fired because he feared for public safety after the vehicle tried to flee, an account that witnesses and immigrant-rights groups disputed. The groups said Guerrero was authorized to work in the United States and had a Social Security number, while ICE described him as an "illegal alien"; his immigration status was not independently confirmed. The agents were not wearing body cameras. Guerrero's death came six days after an ICE officer shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, Texas, and prompted protests and vigils in Biddeford.
