Charles H. Warren: August 3, 1918
… Moving up, shells breaking just ahead of us, two trucks of wounded have passed. To look at the situation now it looks like a complete route of Germans, only hope that we are able to hold it all and still push them back.

George Beck: August 3, 1941
Today as I sit here on the grass I just can’t help my thoughts straying back to the old homeland. Lovely weather like this brings back memories, it seems I must be fated to spend my time out of England. Being here is just like being cut off from the outside world, and it makes one realise just how much home means to him. All I can say is “roll on”. May the day of unity be fast approaching for us all.

Walter Brown: August 3, 1945
President, Leahy and JFB [James F. Byrnes] agreed Japan looking for peace. President afraid they will sue for peace through Russia instead of some country like Sweden. JFB, Truman chide Leahy not to hold out new on the atomic bomb. Leahy still doubtful. This is the subject of much discussion aboard the Renown.
