Most people I know are well aware that the earth is getting hotter because of human industrial activity, and that the earth will respond by cutting our numbers catastrophically if we fail to save ourselves from what is to come.

(* I assume that we do not, in fact, have time — all coastal cities around the world, for example, will flood out in the next 200 years — and knowing human nature as I do, it is perfectly clear that we will not take sufficient measures to save ourselves: instead we will waste most of our collective energy fighting over the deck chairs of the Titanic and blaming each other for not launching lifeboats.)
