This article offers my advice about using hashtags in social media.

Example

[A certain web page] distinguishes between liberals and leftists, a distinction of both article topic and likely categories of readers.

Annotate the distinction with a distinct hashtag summarizing the distinction.

I chose #LiberalsNotLeftists as the most obvious reduction of the article title.

I might have opted for #LeftistsNotLiberals if I felt strongly about promoting #Leftism over #Liberalism.

Hashtag benefits:

  • Promote your cause
  • Make posts findable
  • Group posts by theme
