George Beck: December 8, 1940

Had narrow escape for I was trapped in the cookhouse cellar whilst stealing potatoes. Managed to get away in my bare feet. Saved myself from a beating up by the Germans.

George Beck: December 8, 1943

The mail seems to have stopped altogether, as usual it is near Xmas and every one up to now has found us with something wrong. At present a big battle is going on in Italy and we are progressing very slowly. Roll on a long time.

Friday Today we had our three bread rations stolen; this means we’ve nothing to eat for the next 24 hours. Some people would do anything we’re terribly hungry ourselves and somebody does this.
