Henry J. Hornbeck: June 21, 1863

Henry J. Hornbeck’s Civil War diary (47th Pennsylvania Volunteers, excerpts: 1862-Early 1864). Hornbeck was stationed in Florida, near Key West, at the time of this diary entry.

After dressing we mustered into service, one of the Blacks who arrived from New Orleans, into Quartermasters Department read the Army Regulations to him, and put a Military suit on him, had fine fun, making him swear by the dictionary &c.


Tatsusei Yogi: June 16, 1945

Tatsusei Yogi was a Japanese civilian in Okinawa.

We started to go to Hanja in the early morning, but later decided to go to Maezato instead. When we were passing Nagusuku there was a heavy bombing attack. So we took shelter behind a stone wall all day. Then we went to Hanja, dug a shallow hole, and slept.
