Das Pferd frisst keinen Gurkensalat ("The horse does not eat cucumber salad") is a phrase spoken by telephone pioneer Johann Philipp Reis as a demonstration of the Reis telephone, an early telephone technology.

Reis chose the Das Pferd frisst keinen Gurkensalat to prove that speech can be successfully recognized on the distant end of telephone transmission, because the phrase is difficult to understand acoustically in the German language.
