I think Melville would have preferred "soul penis" [to "soul member"].

He never actually said the P word, but if you read between the lines of Melville and Lovecraft's Omoo: A Narrative of Horrors in the South Seas, it's pretty clear that Melville navigated by the compass needle between his legs.
