He created a new algebraic notation system and, motivated by astronomical computations, did work on infinitesimal calculus and Diophantine equations. Seki laid foundations for the subsequent development of Japanese mathematics known as ''[[Wasan (nonfiction)|wasan]]''; he has been described as "Japan's Newton".
