Das Pferd frisst keinen Gurkensalat ("The horse does not eat cucumber salad") is a phrase spoken by Philipp Reis as a demonstrates of the Reis telephone, an early telephone technology developed by Philipp Reis.
Reis chose the Das Pferd frisst keinen Gurkensalat to prove that speech can be successfully recognized on the distant end of telephone transmission, because the phrase is difficult to understand acoustically in the German language.
