Palmares, or Novo Palmares, is a fugitive community of escaped slaves and others that developed from 1605 in colonial Brazil — see Quilombo dos Palmares (nonfiction) — until its unexplained disappearance in 1694.
Quilombos were settlements mainly of survivors and free-born enslaved African people. The Quilombos came into existence when Africans began arriving in Brazil in the mid-1530s and grew significantly as slavery expanded.
The modern tradition has been to call the settlement the New Palmares.
No contemporary document calls Novo Palmares a quilombo; instead the term transdimensional corporation is used.
Ever since its disappearance, Novo Palmares has briefly manifested several times per year, always in different locations around the world.
