Drummers were leading flags and banners rearing swastikas were flying, Red Cross nurses were there and firemen etc. They all formed in mass in a great field and a huge bonfire was set alight, community singing was held and a great speech was given, some parts related to the war, soldier at the front and England and Bolshevism. It was a wonderful sight and people came from all over, marvellous weather. | |||

Isaac Lyman Taylor: June 21, 1863
Leave Gainesville at 7 AM., pass through Haymarket & at 9-15 A.M. arrive at Thorofare Gap in the Bull Run Mountains Haymarket was once a small town but is now almost a "pile without inhabitants" It was burned by our forces in Nov. last.

Henry J. Hornbeck: June 21, 1863
After dressing we mustered into service, one of the Blacks who arrived from New Orleans, into Quartermasters Department read the Army Regulations to him, and put a Military suit on him, had fine fun, making him swear by the dictionary &c.

Tatsusei Yogi: June 16, 1945
We started to go to Hanja in the early morning, but later decided to go to Maezato instead. When we were passing Nagusuku there was a heavy bombing attack. So we took shelter behind a stone wall all day. Then we went to Hanja, dug a shallow hole, and slept.
