Context: "I'm going to New York for the first time next month. What are the unspoken rules of NY?"
True story
If you get cut off by an undercover squad car while legally crossing a crosswalk, do not slap the vehicle as it roars by.
My friend did this in 1983. Four men in suits frog-marched him to the car, while I, visitor from Minnesota, gaped in dismay.
They let him go, very scared.
