Yesterday's insurrectionist riot, incited by the President, was an outrage and a heartbreak for the millions of us who love this country and revere American democracy. | |||
The Capitol — the People's House — was vandalized and desecrated. Lawmakers and their staffs, government workers and journalists were forced to hide and flee. | |||
One rioter was shot and killed. Three other people died and more than a dozen police officers were injured. Many in the crowd carried Trump banners and some waved the traitorous Confederate flag. | |||
It was one of worst attacks on the Capitol since the British burned it down in 1814. | |||
And yet so far, the people who did this — traitors, terrorists, rioters and vandals, some of them armed — have mostly gotten away with it. After their invasion of the Capitol building, the mob simply walked out, politely escorted by law enforcement officers. The police even helped one woman down the stairs. | |||
Just 68 people have reportedly been arrested so far, most for violating the District of Columbia's emergency curfew, not for the much more serious acts -- including several federal crimes -- committed earlier in the day. | |||
We should have woken up this morning to mass arrests. The President, the Republican Party and law enforcement should be treating this debacle as gravely unacceptable. | |||
To do otherwise would send one dangerous message: This was OK. | |||
