Spanish farthingale
The Spanish verdugado, from which "farthingale" derives, was a hoop skirt originally stiffened with the subtropical Giant Cane; later designs in the temperate climate zone were stiffened with osiers (willow withies), rope, or (from about 1580) whalebone. The name verdugado comes from the Spanish verdugo, ("green wood", or the more modern meaning of "executioner").

Not Customers
Cory Doctorow:
Professionalization isn't perfect: historically, professional societies "were structured around hierarchies of gender and race and laypeople were expected to obey expert judgment without even asking questions."
But professionals were also organized around ethics of service and morals, with professional standards that required practitioners to use their expertise to further the public good.
Decades of neoliberal marketization has flattened out these service-based ethics, turning every kind of professional into just another kind of business with customers who expect "customer service," and "value for money." When teachers have "students," they are meant to teach those students the truth. But once teachers have "customers," they are expected to teach the things that deliver "satisfaction" -- Young Earth Creationism, eugenics, Lost Cause historical revisionism, and so on.
Patagium Theater
The patagium (plural: patagia) is a membranous structure that assists an animal in gliding or flight. The structure is found in living and extinct groups of animals including bats, birds, some dromaeosaurs, pterosaurs, gliding mammals, some flying lizards, and flying frogs.

The Naked Shorts
Naked short selling, or naked shorting, is the practice of short-selling a tradable asset of any kind without first borrowing the security or ensuring that the security can be borrowed, as is conventionally done in a short sale. When the seller does not obtain the shares within the required time frame, the result is known as a "failure to deliver". The transaction generally remains open until the shares are acquired by the seller, or the seller's broker settles the trade.
Short selling is used to anticipate a price fall, but exposes the seller to the risk of a price rise.

Laws only protect
Joe Fowler, business manager of Laborers Local 563, said Wardlow also attacked Minnesota’s prevailing wage law, which builds fair wage and benefit standards into the bidding process for public construction projects. For people who work in the Building Trades, Fowler said, having an attorney general who enforces prevailing wage is critical to their standard of living.
“Laws only protect the honest from the honest,” Fowler said. “Enforcement is what keeps the dishonest from taking advantage of the honest.”

Deceptacle
receptacle: Borrowed from Anglo-Norman receptacle, from Middle French receptacle (“organ containing a fluid; gathering place; water basin”) (modern French réceptacle), from Latin receptāculum (“animal enclosure, container, place of refuge, receptacle, repository, reservoir, shelter”), from receptāre (“to harbour, to receive, to shelter”) or receptō (“I receive back or again, I recover”), frequentative of recipiō (“I receive; I hold back, I reserve”) (from re- (“back, again”) + capiō (“I hold”)) + -culum (suffix forming nouns from verbs, particularly nouns representing tools and instruments); cognate with Italian recettaculo, ricettaculo, Portuguese receptáculo, Spanish receptáculo.

Recursive Apology Disorder
Do you apologize for apologizing? And then issue a third apology to reinforce the second apology?

Lovecraftian health care services
"Well, it now turns out that confidential health service data was delivered to an agency set up by Lovecraftian Great Old Ones, who used the information to rank every person in the British Isles according to their edibility, accompanying the ratings with tasting notes (“a naive little primary school teacher with a rather velvety finish and poignant aftertastes of apricot and childhood sadness”). Acting on this information, Hastur the Unspeakable recently ate Glasgow and everyone in it."

Scrutiny
Scrutiny (French: scrutin; Late Latin: scrutinium; from scrutari, meaning "those who search through piles of rubbish in the hope of finding something of" and originally from the Latin "scruta," meaning "broken things, rags, or rubbish."). In Roman times, the "scrutari" of cities and towns were those who laboriously searched for valuables amidst the waste and cast-offs of others. The modern English "scrutiny" is derived from this root, indicating a careful examination or inquiry (often implying the search for a hidden mistake, misstatement, or incongruity).
The word is specifically applied in the early Roman Catholic Church to the examination of the catechumens or those under instruction in the faith.
Scrutiny is also a term applied to a method of electing a pope in the Catholic Church, in contradistinction to two other methods, acclamation and accession.

$1 bills glued to the HVAC filters
I see the same thing writ large when I do HVAC ductwork. 2’ x 4’ Turning vanes completely clogged with 40 years of dust/munge/fur and they wonder why “the heat isn’t getting up there”. I replaced filters on an old building’s roof unit once and it had $1 bills glued to it, it had sucked them up from strip shows two floors down. It’s great once it’s clean though, I bet even these computer repair folks have to admit there’s nothing as satisfying as peeling off that dust blanket.

Calendar synesthesia
Synesthesia is the fascinating neurological phenomenon whereby stimulation of one sense involuntarily triggers another sensory pathway. A synesthete might taste sounds or hear colors. Now, leading synesthesia researcher VS Rakmachandran at the University of California, San Diego is studying "calendar synesthetes" who see very clear images of calendars in their mind's eye when they think about months that have passed or are in the future. For example, according to New Scientist, one participant in the research "sees her months as occupying an asymmetrical “V” shape. Along this V, she sees each month written in Helvetica font."

Operation Wandering Ghost
Operation Wandering Soul was a propaganda campaign exercised by U.S. Forces during the Vietnam War.
The operation played off the belief of many Vietnamese in the "wandering soul":
"It is the Vietnamese belief that the dead must be buried in their homeland, or their soul will wander aimlessly in pain and suffering. Vietnamese feel that if a person is improperly buried, then their soul wanders constantly. They can sometimes be contacted on the anniversary of their death and near where they died. Vietnamese honor these dead souls on a holiday when they return to the site where they died."

Solid State
Jonathan Coulton is known for a myriad of distinct accomplishments. The tech professional-turned-musician once conducted a Thing a Week experiment, in which he recorded and published a new song every Friday for a year, produced a cover of Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back" infamously adopted by the Fox series Glee, regularly contributes to the NPR quiz show "Ask Me Another" as its very own one-man band, and runs his own fan cruise aptly called the JoCo Cruise.
On April 28 he will release a new album Solid State and today he shares a video for the first single "All this time".
The ... album [Solid State] is linked to a new graphic novel written by Matt Fraction and drawn by Albert Monteys. Solid State narrates a trippy epic, a psychedelic, futuristic narrative about two men whose fates are linked over time (and who are both, as it happens, named Bob) and the God-like artificial intelligence that both protects and abandons them. It's a Neal Stephenson/Ray Kurzweil/Kevin Kelly-inflected fable that is located at the end of the world, much of it deep inside a city that has been sedated by what Coulton calls "nicey-nice fascism" -- locked-in, medicated, machine-run-and which is ringed by a raw, ruined apocalyptic landscape. The graphic novel is a story about how we got there from here.

Carnevale
Finally I want to remind the brothers that the devil makes a lot of leverage on children to bring corruption into the homes of believers; so you need to watch not to fall into its traps placed in our path. An example for all; many believers behind the entreaties of their children bought television to satisfy their wish and make them happy and then they themselves have become slaves of television. They thought they were doing good to their children by buying television, but then over time have included them greatly damaged comprandogliela.
