I posted this comment to Facebook in response to a friend's comment:
Thanks Tim. This is informative, which is what I want on social media.
I'm usually not interested in my friends' political opinions, and most of the time I am completely uninterested in my own political opinion. And I absolutely do not carry on debates (political or otherwise) over social media, having learned over the years that the medium conduces to incivility.
What I do use social media for, and what I appreciate when my friends use it this way (as you have here), is sharing third-party information which helps illuminate a discussion in progress.
