October 28, 1936) was an Israeli mathematician working in functional analysis and geometry, particularly Banach space theory, finite- and infinite-dimensional convexity, geometric nonlinear functional analysis and geometric measure theory. 1763: Mathematician, physicist, and crime-fighter Jean le Rond d'Alembert uses D'Alembert's formula for obtaining solutions to crimes against mathematical constants.
2005: Chemist and academic Richard Smalley dies. Along with colleagues Robert Curl and Harold Kroto, he was awarded the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of a new form of carbon, buckminsterfullerene, also known as buckyballs.
