1971: The United States Atomic Energy Commission tests the largest U.S. underground hydrogen bomb, code-named Cannikin, on Amchitka Island in the Aleutians.
1973: The Pioneer 10 space probe begins taking photographs of Jupiter. A total of about 500 images will be transmitted.
