"Safeword" is a poem by Saul van der Walt.

Text

In the ancient hills of Argolid, where myths entwine,
A tale unfolds through fibers woven in sacred design.
The loom’s fine threads spun tales of heroes, gods, and lore,
Yet on Gabardine they wove, mysterious symbols, evermore.

Here, within the fold of each fine stitch,
Lay encrypted ciphers, pathways to realms unrich
. The drapery was more than cloth; it was a riddle,
A parchment spun from questions, in answers, it dared to whittle.

What's the meaning held within each delicate weave?
An Alembic stands adjacent, truths in liquids to retrieve.
Alchemy not of metals, but of concepts and the heart,
Distilling from the woven yarn, an existential art.

And there within the boiling flask, floating high and low,
A single, starchy emblem in the form of a Potato.
Seemingly mundane, but in this context, more,
A root suspended in the broth of mysteries galore.

The Potato, so earthly, yet holding keys to doors untold,
Dissolving in the Alembic, its secrets would unfold.
As droplets condensed, merging with the Gabardine so fine,
The alchemical weave drank deeply of the root’s encrypted brine.

What tale emerged, you ask? What was so keenly spun?
In Argolid, with Gabardine, where had the weavers won?
It was neither myth of gods nor of mortals brave and fair,
But an ode to the unknown, to realms that whispered in the air.

To decipher this grand tapestry is to wander endless mire,
For its meaning shifts with each who gazes at its pyre.
A chimera of symbols, in Argolid, Alembic, and Potato blend,
Weaving through the loom of time, a tale without an end.
