Background
The vulcans, an insect-like species, hatch from eggs and immediately bond with a human infant which has been carefully selected as a compatible warm-blooded host.
The vulcan larva and the human baby are raised together as constant companions, sharing first a spawning-creche, then a series of successive larger (and more challenging) dual-occupancy ordeal pods.
After seven years — assuming they both survive — the two are subjected to the "Funn Park" coming-of age ritual, which almost almost results in the Vulcan killing the human and immediately ingesting and carefully preserving the human head, which adult vulcans use to mimic human behavior.
Usually the vulcan corners and kills the human with twenty seconds. Vulcans are much stronger than the humans. Furthermore, traditional vulcan society places great shame upon vulcans who fail to swiftly capture and consume their hosts.
Approximately one human in two thousand survives the Funn Park ritual. A seven-year-old human needs great internal resources and, most often, a powerful vulcan sponsor who wants the human to survive (despite the shame).
Human survive either by killing the vulcan, or as a result of political or personal ambition by adult vulcans, for example the Matriach T'Pau desiring a human boy to raise as her lover in a burlesque parody of the Funn Park ritual.
